The DD Waiver program in New Mexico offers a comprehensive array of services that are intended to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to live fulfilling lives in their communities. The program, funded by Medicaid, is an alternative to institutional care, allowing recipients to receive services in their homes or community settings.
What are some of the
Services Provided?
The DD Waiver offers a wide range of services tailored to the specific needs of the individual. Some of the core services include:
Physical Therapy
After an injury, physical therapists (PTs) work to decrease pain, improve movement, and help individuals return to daily activities.
Speech Language Therapy
SLPs assess speech, language, cognitive-communication, and oral/swallowing skills.
Assistive Technology Purchasing
Our team will help you navigate the purchasing process for assistive technologies.
Physical Therapy
After an injury, physical therapists (PTs) work to decrease pain, improve movement, and help individuals return to daily activities. They teach individuals exercises designed to help them regain strength and range of motion.
May be appropriate:
- When a person has difficulty with fine or gross motor skills (such as performing tasks with their hands and/or arms.
- When a person has difficulty with mobility, such as walking, standing, or sitting.
- When a person has difficulty with balance or falling down.
- When a person is in a wheelchair or needs assistance with positioning.
- When a person has difficult with physical tone or conditioning.
- When a person is transferred by others, and staff or family need training in safe transfer techniques.
- When a person has difficulty maintaining physical control over their bode and/or body movements.
- When a person needs adaptive equipment or Prosthetics due to physical limitation.
Speech Therapy
Speech-language therapy is the treatment for individuals with speech and/or language disorders. SLPs assess speech, language, cognitive-communication, and oral/feeding/swallowing skills.
May be appropriate:
- When a person has difficulty communication with others
- When a person is difficult to understand when talking.
- When a person does not talk or has a limited number of words that they use.
- When a person need assistive technology to communicate with others.
- When a person is diagnosed as autistic.
- When a person has had a traumatic brain injury, stroke, or is suffering form dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
- When a person has a severe stutter.
- When a person has a long term hoarse or harsh voice.
- When a person is slow to develop reading and writing skills.
Application Process
Begin by contacting the New Mexico Developmental Disabilities Supports Division (DDSD). They can guide you through the application process.
ASSESSMENT: Eligible applicants will undergo a comprehensive assessment to identify specific needs and appropriate services.
SERVICE PLANNING: A service plan is then developed in collaboration with the individual, their family, and professionals.
SERVICE DELIVERY: once approved, services commence based on the personalized plan.
